Security Advice

The following is a guide to the security requirements for all passengers departing from Isle of Man Airport and also provides some advice that will help passengers pass through the security search point as quickly as possible.

Key points to remember

Where possible, put all liquid items in your hold baggage. This includes water and other drinks, creams, sprays, pastes and gels. Liquids, gels and aerosols are only allowed in individual containers of 100ml. All containers must fit comfortably in 1 transparent, re-sealable bag no larger than 20cm x 20cm. The bag must be presented separately for examination at airport security.

Please note: any containers larger than 100ml (excluding essential medicines, see section below) will not be allowed through the security search point. Most liquids of any amount may still be carried in hold baggage. One lighter per person may be carried through central search. Lighters form part of the allowance of liquid in the litre bag. It is very important that passengers do not place the lighter into their cabin bag after screening, it must be carried on the person for the duration of the flight. Lighters are not permitted in hold baggage. Remember that liquids include all drinks (including water, soup, and syrup), creams, lotions, oils, perfumes, mascara. Sprays and pressurized containers include shaving foam and spray deodorants. Pastes, includes toothpaste. Gels, include hair and shower gel. Plus any other solutions and items of similar consistency. Please note that liquids can be purchased beyond airport security, in the departures area, as these liquids are subject to a separate screening process.

Essential medicines for the period of the trip may be permitted in larger quantities above the 100ml limit, but will be subject to authentication. Passengers must also bring with them supporting documentation from a relevant qualified medical professional.

Liquid baby food or sterilised water, sufficient for the journey can be taken through airport security. The accompanying adult will be required to verify by tasting.

Cabin baggage

Please check with your airline for size and quantity limitations. Pushchairs, walking aids and wheelchairs are permitted, but will be security screened.

Laptops and other large electrical items (larger than A5) have to be removed from cabin baggage and screened separately. Please remember that the security staff are not permitted to deviate from these regulations and are there for the safety of all passengers.

Baggage

Please do not leave baggage unattended at any time. It may be removed and/or destroyed. If you see any unattended bags, please inform any member of staff or the airport information desk immediately.

Your bags will be x-rayed and may be searched by hand. The x-ray machines in used in the central search area do not harm wet film. You may not carry offensive or imitation weapons. Please remove all toy and replica guns (plastic or metal), catapults, household cutlery, knives with blades of any length, letter openers, razor blades (both open bladed and safety razors), tradesmen’s tools, darts, scissors, knitting needles, sporting bats and clubs from your cabin baggage and place in your hold baggage. Hypodermic syringes must also be removed from cabin baggage unless required for genuine medical reasons.

Travel Identification Requirements

Airlines travelling from/to Isle of Man Airport have different identification requirements, please therefore check with your airline as to what is required for your flight. Details of airline websites can be found on Routes and Airlines

Check-in

Check with your carrier what time you need to check in before your flight. You are advised to proceed to the departure lounge as soon as you have checked in. There are flight information display screens throughout the terminal to assist you. Boarding cards must be displayed in order to obtain access to the departure area. All passengers are subject to normal security screening by carefully trained male and female staff. It is a condition of boarding that you allow yourself to be subject to such search as necessary to satisfy the regulations in force at any time. Once in the departure lounge you may not return to check-in or arrivals unless you have permission from the airline or security staff.

Boarding

About 30 minutes before your flight is scheduled to depart, the gate agent will announce pre-boarding procedures and any special information you might need for this flight. If the flight is running late, the ground handling agent will give you updates as to when the flight may be leaving (usually these announcements come every 15-20 minutes or so). It’s (unfortunately) not that uncommon to have a flight be delayed.

Your paper boarding pass or the version on your smartphone will be scanned at the gate. Then you’ll walk outside onto the tarmac and board through steps.
