Aerodrome Closure Changes at Isle of Man Airport (From 1 May 2025)
Also ahead of TT and the peak period we are also reducing the number of ATC closures
What’s changing?
From 1 May 2025, we will reduce the number of scheduled aerodrome closures.
Currently, the aerodrome closes daily:
• 8:30–9:05am
• 11:00–11:35am
After the change, a significant number of these closures will no longer be necessary, reducing disruption.
Why were these closures introduced?
The closures were first introduced in Summer 2023 due to a shortage of qualified air traffic controllers, to allow for necessary rest breaks in accordance with regulatory requirements.
What has made this change possible?
Thanks to ongoing training of air traffic controllers, we are now able to adjust staffing rosters and to help reduce the impact on daily operations.
We want to thank the ATC team for supporting the roster change which will enable this modest but meaningful step towards full operational availability.
Why hasn’t this change been made sooner?
• Training a new air traffic controller takes 3–4 years.
• Experienced controllers relocating from other airports still require 6–18 months for local certification.
• Additionally, we must comply with strict fatigue management regulations to ensure safe operations.
What does this mean for passengers?
• Fewer disruptions during the day, especially when flights are delayed.
• More flexibility for airlines operating to and from the Isle of Man.
• Some closures will still happen, but these will mostly occur during periods when no flights are scheduled.
